When I did my 80 kills I was on a planet with docile/friendly sentinels. The notification for help from ships appeared but no sentinel ships actually came to kill me. Nothing spawned. I had 80 easy kills at the trading dock (on a planet surface). Just keep killing the trader ships that fly there.
